| Hestia | |
![]() |
Demure and modest, Hestia, the virgin goddess of the hearth, is presented here in exquisite detail. Barefoot, she stands upon the base of this statue, clad in white robes and a mantle that hangs from her brow and wraps around her shoulders. Accented with a gold collar, belt, and sleeves, her visage is otherwise one of humility as she offers in outstretched hands the blessing of the sacred hearth fire. It was Hestia who received the first offering at every sacrifice of the household, and it was from her public hearth that fire was carried to each new settlement when the Greeks of old would establish a new colony. Standing 12 in high and 4 in wide, this statue is wonderfully sculpted of cold cast resin. |

| Pele | |
![]() |
She was the daughter of the Earth Goddess Haumea and dwells in the Kilauea volcano. This wild and fiery goddess is widely venerated in Hawaii and other parts of Polynesia. When eruptions threaten towns it is thought that Pele is angry. Her volcanoes are both destroyers and creators of the earth, since her flowing lava makes new land. Pele's husband, the Pig God Kamapua'a, is the inventor of agriculture. Notice the spouting 'lava crest' of her comb headdress. (Adapted from a 19th cent. Carved wood image, Museum of Man, Paris.) Wood colored Resin, 9 in. |
