| Pele | |
![]() |
She was the daughter of the Earth Goddess Haumea and dwells in the Kilauea volcano. This wild and fiery goddess is widely venerated in Hawaii and other parts of Polynesia. When eruptions threaten towns it is thought that Pele is angry. Her volcanoes are both destroyers and creators of the earth, since her flowing lava makes new land. Pele's husband, the Pig God Kamapua'a, is the inventor of agriculture. Notice the spouting 'lava crest' of her comb headdress. (Adapted from a 19th cent. Carved wood image, Museum of Man, Paris.) Wood colored Resin, 9 in. |

| Queen of Heaven | |
![]() |
With her arms raised in blessing and surrounded by a nimbus of stars this goddess was seen as the embodiment of the Eastern Star - Venus. She is based heavily on the mythology of Ishtar, worshipped as early as 4000 BCE in the area of present day Iraq. The filigree is a working star chart as on an astrolabe- an ancient devise used to navigate and tell time. The points are referred to as flames and each indicates the position and name of a star. The zodiac ring, also positioned correctly, is known as the ecliptic. The text on this piece was inspired by the Hymns of Inanna and intended to invoke the divine feminine healing power of the Universe. Polyresin cast with wood finish, 18 5/8 in x 11 1/4 in x 2 1/4 in. Original was carved from mahogany. |

| Saraswati | |
![]() |
The archetype of Human Creativity. As consort of Brahma, Sarasvati is the Goddess of learning and the creative sciences. In Hinduism, the Quiescent or Absolute aspect of Godhead is depicted by the male Divinity, and the active-creative Divine Force by the female energy or Shakti. Just as Kali represents Shakti in her fierce nature, Sarasvati represents her in mild form. She is goddess of speech, poetry, music and science. She is depicted with a veena and her mount, the swan; one hand holds a sacred book, the other confers blessing. Prayers to Sarasvati bring artistic inspiration. Hand painted Ganges clay statue, 8 in. |
